Shipping to Germany

Shipping to Germany is fairly easy to do.  Just be aware that when your package gets to Germany, it will pass through the Customs office (Zollkontrolle).  They will look at your packing slip to see what the cost of the contents is that just arrive.  If it totals more than 45 Euros, then a tax on that item will have to be paid before it is released to the receiver.  The Customs office will send the recipient a written notification that their item is being held with instructions on where to go to pay the tax and how to do so.  There will be contact information on the notification if you need to ask any questions before going.  Once the tax is paid, Customs officials will inspect the package and then release it to the receiver.

Packaging when shipping to Germany

When packaging your item to be shipped to Germany, try to keep in mind that there are standard sizes and packaging that most people adhere by such as envelopes or varying sizes, cylindrical tubes and boxes.  The larger the package, the higher the fee to ship it generally.  Many shipping companies have shipping materials on hand to help you with your packaging.  If you decide to package your shipment yourself, please be sure that the address of its destination in Germany is clearly visible and that no other addresses or bar codes are showing, such as from a previously used box or something.  Also make sure the box is securely closed with packing tape such as paper shipping tape or clear packing tape.  You don't want the box to accidentally pop open in transit and your items you are shipping to fall out.

Shipping limitations to Germany

Check with the shipping company you choose when sending something to Germany for their shipping limitations guide.  Most countries do not allow live animals, chemicals or bacteria to be shipped as examples.  If you did want to ship an animal, there are ways to do so, such as having them travel with you on a plane or train.  In these types of situations, you will definitely want to check with your shipping company for guidance as they will have the most up to date information on the subject.
